The Independent Science News article “Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene in Commercial GMO Crops” was the basis of two UK news stories in January: “Uncovered, the ‘toxic’ gene hiding in GM crops: Revelation throws new doubt over safety of foods” by Sean Poulter, Consumer Affairs Editor in the Daily Mail and the Express story by John Ingham, “New Row Over GM Food.” (note: the original Express article link has been altered to go to nonsense so this link is to a website that put up the original post)

The ISN story, its follow-up article Is the Hidden Viral Gene Safe? GMO Regulators Fail to Convince, and the Joint GM Freeze and BSR Q&A Press Release also led to several radio interviews with Dr. Jonathan Latham, the lead author. In Dr. Latham’s interview on 11 March 2013 with Kenny Jones on Talk Radio Europe, you can listen to the Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project give his view of the impact genetically engineered (GE) seeds on food and farming and the inadequacies of food safety regulation. Interview questions include who needs GE organisms? Why do farmer’s grow GE seeds? What are the implications of GE seeds for food and seed prices? And what are the safety implications of the ‘Hidden’ Viral Gene VI DNA found in the majority of genetically engineered plants? Listen to this important interview at the following mp3 link: www.talkradioeurope.com/clients/latham.mp3

A link to the follow-up interview on 18 March 2013 where Dr. Latham and Mr. Jones discuss the positive alternatives to industrial agriculture and the use of GE seeds will be posted soon. Dr. Latham was also interviewed by Lorax Live on 15 March 2013 and that link will be posted when available.
