Synopsis: A researcher working at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has been bitten by a mouse that was infected with a genetically altered, mouse-adapted, version of SARS-CoV-2. The accident highlights the dangers of coronavirus research. It also draws attention to the rapid expansion of such research in the wake of the COVID19 pandemic. Third, it brings to light attempts by universities to conceal high risk virus research from public scrutiny. These concealments, according to academics interviewed by Independent Science News, represent clear violations of science’s historic social contract with society at large.
